Nordic Shelter was born in 2004 when Mikael Virtanen — a master canvas worker with a background in industrial sail making — saw a gap in the market for genuinely Finnish-made tents built to survive real Arctic winters. His first workshop was a converted barn outside Tampere. His first product was a lavvu-style canvas tent ordered by a local reindeer herder.
Twenty years later, the company still operates from Tampere, now from a purpose-built 2,000 m² workshop. The principles haven't changed: every product is designed, cut and sewn in-house, by people who take real pride in their craft. No outsourcing. No shortcuts.
We've shipped to over 40 countries — from Lapland safari camps to Antarctic research stations. Our customers keep coming back because when we say "built to last", we mean a lifetime.
Every product — from the smallest repair to the largest industrial shelter — is made entirely in our Tampere workshop. We don't outsource a single stitch.
Finland's climate is our testing ground. Our products survive conditions that would destroy lesser shelters — because we design for the worst, not the average.

Former industrial sail maker with 30 years of canvas experience. Mikael founded Nordic Shelter in 2004 and personally oversees every complex custom order that comes through the workshop.
Graduated from Tampere University of Applied Sciences in textile engineering. Aino handles all custom design briefs, produces technical drawings and advises clients on materials and construction.
18 years on the workshop floor. Juhani manages day-to-day production, quality control and delivery logistics. If your order is on time and perfect, it's because of Juhani.
